Wow! Google Maps adds Accident & Construction indicators!

April 17th, 2008 Brian Cometa 2 comments

Just checking the traffic from Burbank to Venice today when I noticed that Google has expanded their “traffic” view to include traffic accidents and construction warnings, including a description of the accident or construction taking place!

South Park’s on Macs!

April 16th, 2008 Brian Cometa 2 comments

Being a huge South Park fan AND Mac tech/geek/fan, I was delighted with tonight’s show. The whole country lost Internet access and went crazy. But the best part was seeing all the Macs — Randy mentioned the “Mac Store” and Safari was being used as the web browser on every computer (even the PCs!)! Plus, newbies learned one of the ultimate troubleshooting techniques, unplug and replug :)

Newbie Tip: The Black Dot Means Save

April 10th, 2008 Brian Cometa No comments

Next time you’re working with a document that can be saved (i.e. e-mail, word document, photoshop image), take a look in the upper left hand corner of the window. As usual, you’ll see these red, yellow, and green buttons:

You probably already know that red closes, yellow minimizes, and green resizes – or zooms or maximizes, depending on the program.

What you may not have noticed is the red dot will contain a smaller black dot when the document you’re editing can be saved:

Moral of the story: when you see the dot, SAVE YOUR WORK!

I’m going to show you how to use some lesser known features of iCal and 1Password to AUTOMATICALLY launch your web browser, open a specific web site, and login to the site – at a specific time or recurring date.

Every other morning I post my computer repair ad on Craigslist. The earlier the better on Craigslist, so I like to have it ready and waiting for me when I wake up. You may want to have your bank account, stock portfolio, and myspace page open every morning; or your cable provider, electric company, and car insurance page open when it’s time to pay your bills.

Fresh Apps :: iPhone / Mac OS X :: April 2008, Week 1

April 7th, 2008 Brian Cometa No comments

Fresh Apps is a brief summary of the interesting applications I’ve discovered over the past week.

April 2008, Week 1

Mac Applications

Camouflage :: Donationware
Hide all icons from your desktop, great when you have a beautiful wallpaper you don’t want covered up

Clarion :: Shareware ($15)
Small and simple musical pitch/interval ear training app

iFlash :: Shareware ($15)
Make your own flash cards for studying or download other user’s flash cards

Ziphone :: Free
There are a bunch of iPhone jailbreak utilities out there; I used Ziphone a few days ago to effortlessly jailbreak a client’s iphone; also installs installer.app!

Personal Brain :: Free – $250
A really cool looking interface for project planning, outlining, or organizing your thoughts and ideas

iPhone Applications

Snapture :: Donationware (on installer.app)
Camera replacement – includes burst shooting, 3x zoom, b/w & color, 5 second timer, silent mode, toggle auto rotation; and this is just version 1.0!

Twitxr :: Free (on installer.app)
Thought I already mentioned this because it’s one of my favorites; this app lets you take a picture, type a short message, and send to your twitxr page (instant photo bloging). FYI, it’s pronounced “Twitcher.”

• Wallpaper :: Free (on installer.app)
Share your wallpaper with everyone; see and download everyone else’s wallpaper!

Ants :: Free (on installer.app)
Stupid and mildly entertaining app that adds ants to your iphone screen; squash them, scare them, watch them walk over your apps – not sure why, but i like it!
