While most online songs are in MP3 format, which is compressed and degrades audio quality, some are available in another format called FLAC. FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec. FLAC file sizes are much larger in exchange for superior sound quality (like a CD) — they also aren’t supported in iTunes.

I recently downloaded some FLAC audio tracks and started looking for the best way to get them into iTunes; enter Fluke.

Use Text-To-Speech (“Start Speaking Text”) in Firefox

A few days ago I made my yearly move from Safari to Firefox. It starts up quicker for me than Safari and web pages load 2-3x faster.

However, I was stumped today when I wanted my Mac to read me a Flash 101 tutorial. I went to Firefox -> Services -> Speech, but “Start Speaking Text” was grayed out.

After a quick Google search I found a simple 2-step solution (thanks to aynmensch @ mozillazine): setup a shortcut key for “reading selected text” which can be evoked within Firefox.

“Unblock” Blocked Called ID On Your iPhone For Free

There a new free service in town from the gang that brought us Spoofcard, it’s called Trapcall.

Trapcall comes in three flavors; Fly Trap (two features), Mouse Trap (more features), Bear Trap (all eight features). The most basic plan, Fly Trap, unblocks restricted phone numbers and provides a blacklist for unwanted callers — for free.

For $10-$25/month, you can add on more services like “Voicemail transcription” by a live operator and caller ID name and billing address retrieval. Click here to see all the plans and features available.

The setup/sign-up process takes only 3-4 minutes. To setup on your iPhone you just enter a series of keypad clicks into your phone and press “Call” — it’s super easy.

To use it: reject an incoming blocked call, wait 1-2 seconds while the call is routed through Trapcall and back to your cell, phone will re-ring with caller ID.

Browse Files Using the Arrow Keys in Quick Look’s Full Screen Mode

February 3rd, 2009 Brian Cometa 1 comment

A new hint was posted today on Mac OS X Hints explaining how to re-gain use of the arrow keys in Quick Look’s full screen mode. The solution worked but I thought that there had to be a better, quicker, easier way.

So, I started trying various other keys when in Quick Look full screen and I stumbled upon a much easier solution:
