I’ve followed this to the letter, including opening Transmission on my firewall, but the port remains closed.
For those with “Port Closed” problems, try setting the Airport base station to bridge mode (in the Connection Sharing tab). Often the Port Closed error is a result of using Airport as a second wireless router after the one your ISP provided, so you would need to port forward each router separately, which can get complex.
